Washington State Survey Examines Use of Cannabis Among Adults Driving with a Child

A recent study surveyed a group of more than 2,000 Washington state drivers to gain a greater understanding of motorists driving under the influence of marijuana. Individuals were approached at various roadside locations for the opportunity to participate in the study. More than 14%, or nearly one in seven, motorists driving with children in the vehicle tested positive for the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, THC. The survey also found that motorists’ attitudes about marijuana impairment correlated with when they consumed marijuana and drove with a child. Among those who thought cannabis was “very likely” to impair driving, 8.9% tested positive for THC, compared to 40.6% who thought that it was “not very likely at all” to impair driving.
