Park County Chain-Up Stations
About the Project:
Construction crews will soon be back from winter shutdown to resume work on the chain up station project along Colorado Highway 9 near Alma and US Highway 285 near Grant. The start date to resume work in May is weather dependent.
During the 2022 project season, the chain-up station project on US 285 was nearly completed with the chain up pull-out area created. Temporary lighting and advanced warning signs were installed. The installation of permanent lighting/signing and soil stabilization will be completed in August.
Project Benefits:
- The project will allow motorists and freight vehicles a safe location to put chains on/off when the chain law is in effect, or in snow-packed driving conditions for traveling over Hoosier Pass (CO 9) or Kenosha Pass (US 285).
- Advance warning signs will be installed to assist with wayfinding.
- Lighting installation will improve visibility for motorists at chain up stations.
Work Schedule:
- Work starts on CO 9 location near Alma
- Work will be completed for US 285 in August 2023
- The anticipated completion date for the project is September 2023
- Travelers will encounter construction operations Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Traffic Impacts for 2023
- Most of the work will be performed off the roadway on the shoulder.
- Occasionally flaggers will be necessary to guide motorists through the construction zone.
