I-70 Bridge Over Washington Street

About the Project:

The Colorado Department of Transportation and ABCO Contracting began work to improve the I-70 bridge over Washington Street in Denver County in May. The project includes bridge deck repairs, storm sewer removal and replacement, bridge expansion device replacements, and median wall replacements. The project zone will span the length of the I-70 bridge (Mile Point 274.5 to MP 274.61) and will impact both east and westbound lanes.

Work Schedule:

• The project started the first week of May and is anticipated to be completed in late October 2023.
• During the month of May, crews worked working daytime hours from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
• After May, work transitioned to nighttime hours from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday night through Friday morning. Night work is expected to continue through the end of the project.

Traffic Impacts:

Motorists can expect the following impacts during the period of construction:

• From June through the fall of 2023, there will be nighttime single and double lane closures on I-70. This will include the Express Lane and general purpose lanes over Washington Street.
• I-70 ramps to Washington Street will close intermittently during the night work with temporary detour routes in place. The ramps from I-70 to I-25 may experience single lane closures as well.
• Crews will be replacing expansion joints and large steel plates will be placed on the roadway to help facilitate work.
• Drivers are encouraged to exercise extreme caution traveling over the steel plates. Please slow down within the work zone, watch for construction vehicles entering the highway, and leave plenty of space between vehicles.
• Traffic impacts are expected to be minimal with delays up to ten minutes.
