CO 13 Garco Rio Blanco Hill Widening

About the Project:

The Colorado Department of Transportation along with IHC Scott will widen 3.5 miles of roadway located 11 miles northwest of Rifle. New passing lanes will be created from 26’ to 40’, pullouts, and also a new chain up area.  Work will begin May 9.
The location of the project is on CO 13 from Mile Points 12.78 to 16.18. Mobilizing equipment and materials will begin on April 25, with traffic impacts starting on May 9.

This project will be completed in two phases. During the first phase of the project, the team will work on culverts, drainage, embankment and widening of slopes, and the start of the wildlife underpass. Project completion is expected in November 2023. 

A planned winter shutdown is now in place for the project. Work will resume in Spring 2023.

Work Schedule

  • Monday-Friday 6 a.m. - 7 p.m., Saturday work may occur if necessary.

Traffic Impacts

  • WIDTH RESTRICTION: No loads over 12' wide, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Use Alternate Routes.

  • The speed limit is reduced to 35 mph through the work zone

  • There is a shoo-fly in place to accommodate traffic

  • Traffic will be guided by signals with alternating lane closures
